Woody Guthrie’s Holy Ground

Who could ever imagine that the boxcar-riding Oklahoma folksinger, Woody Guthrie, would find inspiration from his progressive Yiddish poet mother-in-law, Aliza Greenblatt? Join Woody’s daughter, Nora Guthrie, as she shares photographs, writings, and artwork that illuminate their personal and creative relationship. Lorin Sklamberg, lead singer of the Grammy-award winning Klezmatics, will perform Yiddish and English songs with lyrics written by both Guthrie and Greenblatt.

Lyrics by Woody Guthrie, Music by Frank London

Take off, take off your shoes

This place you’re standing, it’s holy ground

Take off, take off your shoes

The spot you’re standing, its holy ground

These words I heard in my burning bush

This place you’re standing, it’s holy ground

I heard my fiery voice speak to me

This spot you’re standing, it’s holy ground

That spot is holy holy ground

That place you stand it’s holy ground

This place you tread, it’s holy ground

God made this place his holy ground

Lyrics by Woody Guthrie, Music by Frank London

Mermaid Avenue that’s the street

Where the lox and bagles meet,

Where the hot dog meets the mustard

Where the sour meets the sweet;

Where the beer flows to the ocean

(Where the halvah meets the pickle)

Where the wine runs to the sea;

Why they call it Mermaid Avenue

That’s more than I can see.
