Israeli puppet master Yael Rasooly’s puppets are no muppets – as she says, her works are “as sweet as saccharine and cruel as a Grimm fairy tale.” While you may be familiar with adult puppet shows like Avenue Q, Yael’s original one-woman theatrical performance in Paper Cut is a departure – a masterful creation of a retro world through cut paper “puppets.” The award-winning show, created in 2009, has shown in 50+ festivals and cities around the world. As one of the world’s top puppeteers, we’re lucky to have her in Boston for a weekend in July.
Writer Etgar Keret says, “Paper Cut by Yael Rasooly, is a rare instance in which a wild imagination and impressive improvisational skills are blended with meticulous thought and investment. The love of the medium, which is evident in each and every scene, has reminded me that some experiences can only be had in a theatre.”
Check out Paper Cut and meet Yael at the Puppet Showplace Theater in Brookline on July 15/16. Tickets and info here. For the artists and adventurous amongst us, check out her master class on Sunday, July 16.
