Word of the Week: Bereisheet

bereisheet / bereshit / barasheet / Genesis / #inthebeginning

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)

Bereisheet is the very first word of the Torah (aka bible, aka Old Testamant, aka Tanach).  It literally and figuratively marks many beginnings, and we read the story of Bereisheet every year on Rosh Hashanah to celebrate the birthday of the world.  When astronaut Dr. Jeff Hoffman read Bereisheet on Shuttle Columbia in 1996, it was the first time that Torah was read in outer space. Check out the video of him talking about it here!

Join Dr. Hoffman as he discusses the beginning of the world with Rabbi Leslie Gordon over Shabbat dinner on September 30.
